Clever songwriting, a great delivery from Deborah Harry, a synthesis of sixties pop smeared with NYC smarts and Bowery grime. Blondie's 1976 debut album came at a time when punk was relatively new and unfamiliar. It offers an almost throw back, The Supremes sound coupled with the raunchy and trashy lyrics of The Ramones. The instrumentation perfectly captures its time, with crunching guitars and primitive drumming. Deborah Harry's vocals are also in top form as usual, jumping from an almost swaggering delivery, to a more delicately light and airy touch.
