With all the great LP classics released in 1970, it's easy to forget that this debut was actually one of the first records to transform and renew soul into a new decade. Positive civil rights messages but above all, an artistic-emancipatory manifesto. Mayfield not only says goodbye to the 60s soul of the Impressions, but also to the commercial, pop Motown track. He focuses on songs, on melodies, often places the guitar at the center as the main instrument and prepares the ground for "Blaxploitation" with the use of the "Wah Wah" pedal and cleverly used soulful horn sections.
