A transitional album on which the band moved from Syd Barrett's relatively concise and vivid songs to spacy, ethereal material with lengthy instrumental passages. Pink Floyd shifted from quirky psych-pop to a full-on space-rock assault and this record was a giant step towards the kind of cosmic exploits they would soon be famous for.
