U2s most focused and hardest rocking album to that date was boasting propulsive, martial rhythms and shards of guitar. It bristled with anger, despair and passion and it was the record where Bono truly found the full righteous power of his voice. U2 blended spiky post-punk and experimental textures and rhythms into music that had great commercial appeal and this record is one of the most vital in their discography.
